Still

"Still" evokes the unimaginable length of time during which the ocean and these rocks have simply coexisted in one place. I combined two very different techniques to convey the opposing physical properties of land, sea and sky, unifying them by using a limited color palette. For the ledges, I laid on thick textured paint with pallette knives to capture the roughly eroded yet solid surfaces of granite. For the ocean and clouds I used thin, transparent glazes to evoke their calm, almost heavy, liquid presence. Use the Zoom feature to see these textures more closely.

This painting is currently traveling to five different museums across the United States as part of the 18th National Exhibition of the American Society of Marine Artists. It is available for sale, but will not be deliverable until the end of the exhibit in October 2021.
